The evidence
Granada's serial adapts Evelyn Waugh's novel about Charles Ryder and his entanglement with the aristocratic Catholic Flyte family. While John Mortimer retains official credit, his script was discarded; the production followed the book directly, using much of Waugh's original narration in voice-over.
