  • The Western Front (1917)
  • The German Withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line

The date in the title is doing work. The film is set on 6 April 1917, during the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line, and most of what the two men walk through is that withdrawal rather than a battle. From the record: the ground given up deliberately and left ruined behind them, the felled orchards, the poisoned wells and the booby-trapped dugouts; the trench system and the gap between the lines; the Devonshire Regiment; and the plain fact that an order to call off an attack travelled at the speed of a man walking, or did not arrive. The landscape they cross is reconstructed from photographs.

  • His Grandfather's Stories of the Western Front
  • Alfred Mendes

Sam Mendes has said the film comes from stories his grandfather Alfred told him, a runner on the Western Front, and the single-take conceit exists to carry that: a message that has to be delivered across a distance, in something close to the time it would take. The two soldiers are invented and the mission too.

About the work

1917

It is partially inspired by stories told to Mendes by his paternal grandfather Alfred about his service during World War I. The film takes place after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich, and follows two British soldiers in their mission to deliver an important message to call off a doomed offensive attack. The two main roles are played by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman. Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth, Adrian Scarborough, and Benedict Cumberbatch also star in supporting roles.
