InfluenceMEDIUM

Lucian's voyage is the model for the satirical impossible voyage that Swift made his own: a narrator who swears to the truth of plainly absurd travels, used to mock travellers' tales and the society at home. Swift knew Lucian well, and A True Story is routinely named first among Gulliver's classical ancestors.

About the work

Ἀληθῆ διηγήματα (A True Story)

The narrator sails out past the Pillars of Heracles and his ship is lifted by a whirlwind to the Moon, where he is drawn into a war between the king of the Moon and the king of the Sun. Later swallowed by a giant whale and landing on the Isle of the Blessed, he tells a string of openly impossible adventures as a parody of travellers' tales and of historians who presented fables as fact.
