Lee Chang-dong's film adapts Haruki Murakami's short story "Barn Burning": a young man, a woman he knew as a child, and a rich, enigmatic stranger who says he burns down greenhouses for pleasure. Lee moves it to contemporary Korea and turns the story's ambiguity about a disappearance into a thriller of class resentment.
