Voltaire met Swift's circle during his English exile and admired Gulliver's Travels. Micromégas turns Swift's play with scale outward into space: giants from Sirius and Saturn who find humanity tiny, quarrelsome and absurdly proud.

About the work

Micromégas (Micromegas)

Micromégas, a giant from a planet circling Sirius, travels through space with a companion from Saturn and reaches Earth, which at first seems empty to beings their size. Finding a ship of philosophers returning from the Arctic, they question them about the soul and the universe, and find human pride absurdly out of scale with human size.
