AdaptationHIGH

The BBC and Hulu series of Sally Rooney's novel, co-written by Rooney herself with Alice Birch and Mark O'Rowe, directed by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald. Twelve half-hour episodes against a novel structured as time-jumps between Marianne and Connell, which is an unusually good fit: each jump becomes an episode, and the novel's free indirect style, the thing that looks hardest to film, is replaced by long takes and silence rather than by voiceover.

About the work

Normal People

At school Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other. He’s popular and well-adjusted, star of the school soccer team while she is lonely, proud, and intensely private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her housekeeping job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers - one they are determined to conceal. Normal People is Rooney's second novel, published after Conversations with Friends (2017). It was first published by Faber & Faber on 30 August 2018. The book became a bestseller in the United States, selling almost 64,000 copies in hardcover in its first four months of release. It was also a bestseller in China, where its coming of age theme was popular with younger readers. A critically acclaimed and Emmy nominated television adaptation of the same name aired from April 2020 on BBC Three and Hulu. A number of publications ranked it one of the best books of the 2010s.
