InfluenceMEDIUM

Lawrence's trilogy belongs to the wave Martin made commercially possible: fantasy where the protagonist is not admirable, where a point-of-view character can die, and where the setting's cruelty is the subject rather than the backdrop. Prince Jorg is that position pushed to its end, a boy who opens the book with a massacre and narrates it without apology. That is publishable in a market A Song of Ice and Fire built. Filed MEDIUM. It is a genre inheritance rather than a borrowing, and Lawrence's stated influences lean more on Gene Wolfe than on Martin.

About the work

The Broken Empire Trilogy

This is a series.

Once a privileged royal child, raised by a loving mother, Jorg Ancrath has become the Prince of Thorns, a charming, immoral boy leading a grim band of outlaws in a series of raids and atrocities. The world is in chaos: violence is rife, nightmares everywhere. Jorg's bleak past has set him beyond fear of any man, living or dead, but there is still one thing that puts a chill in him. Returning to his father's castle Jorg must confront horrors from his childhood and carve himself a future with all hands turned against him.
