Sienkiewicz builds the novel on the persecution under Nero and on Acts and the Pauline epistles, and takes its title from the apocryphal exchange in which Peter, fleeing Rome, meets Christ on the road and asks where he is going. Peter and Paul appear as characters. It won Sienkiewicz the Nobel and was the most widely translated Polish novel of its century.
