Film · 2003

InfluenceMEDIUM

Ringu is what made the Korean and Japanese horror wave of the early 2000s commercially possible, and A Tale of Two Sisters is working in the grammar it fixed: a long-haired female revenant, horror carried by stillness and sound rather than by shock, and a domestic interior that becomes unsafe without changing. Kim Jee-woon's film then departs where it matters, grounding the haunting in a family's guilt and an unreliable perspective rather than in a curse that propagates. Filed MEDIUM: a regional wave rather than a debt either film-maker has stated.
