M. Night Shyamalan has said Signs began as "an end-of-the-world movie, à la Night of the Living Dead, where it's from the perspective of a house": a family boarding up the windows against something trying to get in.
Shyamalan's opening titles for Signs deliberately echo Saul Bass's for Psycho, with Bernard Herrmann-like strings, and the film builds its suspense in Hitchcock's manner, from what is withheld.
