InfluenceMEDIUM

Tolkien acknowledged in a letter that the Dead Marshes and the approach to the Morannon owe something to William Morris and his Huns and Romans, as in The House of the Wolfings. Morris's Mirkwood, his northern tribes at war with an empire and his archaic prose were a model Tolkien admired from his student days.

About the work

The House of the Wolfings

The Wolfings, a Gothic kindred living in the clearings of Mirkwood, gather with the other houses of the Mark to fight the invading Roman legions. Their war leader Thiodolf is given a dwarf-made mail coat by the demigoddess who loves him, which will keep him alive but at a cost to his people, and he must choose between them.
