This is a series.
In the Shima Imperium, a land modelled on feudal Japan and choked by the pollution of the blood lotus, the shogun sends the hunter Masaru and his daughter Yukiko to capture a thunder tiger, a creature thought extinct. Yukiko can speak to animals with her mind, and her bond with the griffin draws her into rebellion against the shogunate.
