The evidence
Kander and Ebb's musical, with a book by Joe Masteroff, is credited as based on Christopher Isherwood's Berlin stories and John Van Druten's play I Am a Camera, adapted from them. Sally Bowles, the cabaret and the approach of the Nazis come from Isherwood's Berlin of the early 1930s.
