What influenced Batman

The works this one is recorded as drawing on.

Batman

Comic · 1940

AdaptationHIGH

Tim Burton's film adapts DC's character: Bruce Wayne, orphaned by a street crime, fighting crime in Gotham City as Batman, and his war with the Joker. It takes the darker comics of the 1980s as its tone rather than the 1960s television series.

Batman: The Killing Joke

Comic · 1988

InfluenceMEDIUM

Tim Burton has said Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's The Killing Joke was the comic that won him over to Batman, and his Joker follows its origin: a criminal who falls into a vat of chemicals at a plant, emerges with bleached skin and a fixed grin, and sees himself and Batman as each other's creation.

About the work

Batman

This is a series.

A city so corrupt that its police cannot be told from its criminals acquires two men in costume at once: a millionaire who works at night, and a gangster who falls into a chemical vat and comes out delighted with himself. Tim Burton shoots Gotham as an expressionist nightmare of stacked iron and permanent dusk, and the film takes its hero seriously, which none of the screen Batmans before it had.
