InfluenceMEDIUM

Stoker's working notes show Carmilla's influence: an early draft opened in Styria, where Le Fanu set his story, a setting kept in the discarded chapter published as Dracula's Guest. Both tell of an aristocratic vampire preying on a young woman who weakens night by night.

About the work

Carmilla

In a remote castle in Styria, a lonely young woman, Laura, takes in a mysterious girl, Carmilla, after a carriage accident. They grow close as Laura weakens and local girls die, until Carmilla is revealed as Mircalla, a centuries-old vampire. Le Fanu's novella appeared 25 years before Dracula.
