Harry Potter

The eight Warner films of Rowling's seven novels, 2001 to 2011. Series to series, with the volumes named here rather than split into their own connections (principle 13). The census found this pair twice, once through Philosopher's Stone and once through Chamber of Secrets, and they are one relationship. Worth recording about the shape of it:

• Columbus's first two are close to transcription; Cuaron's Prisoner of Azkaban is the break, and every later film follows his lead rather than Columbus's
• Deathly Hallows is split in two, which is where the modern habit of splitting a final volume comes from
• Peeves, Ludo Bagman and the whole house-elf liberation subplot never appear

Grossman has discussed the debt openly, and the book is built to be read against it. Brakebills is a secret magical college reached by an impossible entrance exam, with houses, a brutal specialisation system, and a teaching staff who withhold what the students most need to know. What it changes is the consequence. Passing the exam does not fix Quentin, the magic is taught as exhausting technical labour rather than as wonder, and the graduates end up rich, bored and self-destructive. The two-target structure is deliberate: Brakebills answers Hogwarts, and Fillory answers Narnia, which the graph already holds as a separate edge.

Bardugo's trilogy is built on the young-adult fantasy market Rowling created and wears its shape: an orphan who discovers a latent power, is removed to an institution that trains people like her, is sorted by ability, and finds the charismatic authority running it is the antagonist. What it changes is the setting, deliberately. The Grishaverse is Tsarist-Russian rather than English boarding school, and the magic is a physiology rather than a curriculum. Filed MEDIUM: a genre inheritance rather than a stated debt, and the strongest part of the claim is commercial rather than textual.

Rowling has spoken about growing up on British boarding school stories, and Hogwarts runs on Blyton's machinery before it runs on magic:

• Four houses, a points system, and a cup awarded at the end of the year
• A train that takes the children away from their parents in the first chapter
• Dormitory friendships formed in week one and kept for seven books
• A competitive sport nobody outside the school has heard of

The graph already holds Narnia and The Worst Witch pointing here. This is the third leg, and the one that supplies the institution rather than the wardrobe or the witch.

Narnia likely influenced Harry Potter indirectly by helping establish the modern tradition of children's fantasy in which young protagonists enter a magical world and confront profound moral choices. However, Rowling has not identified it as a primary source for her story or world, and Harry Potter ultimately develops its own distinct style, mythology, and narrative structure.
