Works that record this one as a source, with the evidence a contributor gave.

Star Wars

Film · 1977

InfluenceMEDIUM

C-3PO's design comes from the robot Maria. Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for the droid was drawn after the Metropolis robot, and the finished costume keeps its gold, art-deco figure. The claim is about C-3PO, and the rest of the film owes Metropolis nothing in particular.

Blade Runner

Film · 1982

InfluenceMEDIUM

Blade Runner's Los Angeles takes its vertical city from Metropolis: the powerful in a pyramid above the streets, the crowds and machinery below. The debt is cited by the film's designers and in most histories of both films.

Fritz Lang's city divides its rich thinkers above ground from the workers who toil at the machines beneath, until they rise up.

About the work

Metropolis

In a vast city of the future, the wealthy live in towers above while workers tend the machines underground. Freder, son of the city's master, falls for Maria, a young woman who preaches peace to the workers, and the inventor Rotwang builds a robot in her likeness that is used to incite them to destroy the city.
