S. S. Rajamouli has named Braveheart and Mel Gibson's films as RRR's models for action and for a rebel's rising against colonial rule.

Rajamouli told Seth Meyers that Inglourious Basterds' fictional take on history licensed RRR's liberties with its two real revolutionaries.

Rajamouli has said he copied scenes from Kung Fu Panda, naming RRR's Komuram Bheemudo song as one.

Rajamouli named Ben-Hur (1959) among the big inspirations for the scale of RRR's action.

Both leads are real revolutionaries, and the film says openly that it is inventing everything they do. Komaram Bheem led a Gond rebellion against the Nizam of Hyderabad in the 1930s and was killed in 1940. Alluri Sitarama Raju led the Rampa Rebellion against the British in 1922 and was executed in 1924. They were separated by region, cause and about a decade, and they never met. The film's premise is the meeting that could not have happened, and the closing titles list other independence figures as though the story had been about them too.
