InfluenceMEDIUM

Tolkien acknowledged in a letter that his goblins, the orcs of The Hobbit, owe a good deal to the goblin tradition as it appears in George MacDonald, except for the soft feet, which he never believed in. MacDonald's goblins live under the mountain and threaten the people above, as Tolkien's do.

About the work

The Princess and the Goblin

Eight-year-old Princess Irene lives in a house in the mountains, above mines where goblins driven underground long ago now plot against the people above. With the help of the miner's boy Curdie and her mysterious great-great-grandmother, who gives her a magic thread to follow, she defeats the goblins' plan to kidnap her and flood the mines.
