Paul King wrote the film as a companion piece to the 1971 film as well as the novel, reprising some of its music, its themes and its Oompa Loompa design. Chalamet's first costume photo carried Gene Wilder's line "The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last."

Wonka is a prequel built on Roald Dahl's character: Paul King's original story set 25 years before the events of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
